Joe Biden Guilty of Violating Basic Persuasion Rules

Democratic Vice Presidential Candidate Joe Biden really blew it in his resent interview from an effective persuasion stand point.

He said that it is “Time to give back” “Time to be patriotic.” He used the word “Take” to explain his ideas on wealth redistribution.

This is not a political blog, this is an effective persuasion blog. But I’ll get it out of the way, I support McCain.

From a persuasion perspective he failed the basics because of a couple of things:

Persuasion is not about forcing your ideas on anyone. It’s about pointing out what the benefits of your ideas are and then getting others to accept them because they see how doing so will be beneficial to them. His tone and mannerisms were forceful.

Next-

His choice of words was horrible. People who are good at effectively persuading others are careful of the words we choose. We know that some words scare people and cause them to naturally resist our ideas on a conscious and subconscious level. If I say I’m going to “take” something you will naturally hold on to it a little tighter.

Let me know your thoughts!

  1. Mike,
I have just read your blog on Biden and Palin and I am very interested in the persuasive techniques that you pointed out.

In this respect I have a question for you: How would you use an individual’s character/personality to persuade them to do something?

It would be good to hear your thoughts on this,
