Why You Should Be the Producer and the Star

For the Salesperson and the Small Business owner it is their personal magnetism that drives their growth and success early on. In essence, many salespeople and small business owner become the producer and the star of their own show. Being the producer and the star is a good thing, here’s why:

We have all heard that we need to work on our business and not in our business. Don’t get me wrong – I am all for building a big organization if that is what your goal is. You just need to be careful about letting go and stepping off too soon.

Every now and then one of the Hollywood gossip shows reveals how difficult some stars are to work with. The demands they make, the attitudes they come with and expenses they add are incredible. For Hollywood producers this simply comes with the territory and is justified by the millions and millions of dollars on the line. But for a small business owner allowing someone else to be the “star” in your business can be very dangerous.

Any employee in a key customer service, delivery, or selling role needs to be watched very closely by the owner of the business. Any employee that is in a role that requires them to build personal relationships with clients and customers needs a happy balance of “sense of ownership” combined with knowing they are “expendable.” It is a very tough balance!

As a business owner you really need to be the star until your business is big enough to the point of not depending on yours or any one person’s personality to keep it going.

For a while you should really consider being the “Star” and “Producer.” Just think, you won’t have to worry about meeting all of those Hollywood star demands that drive producers crazy.
