Using The Other Person’s Personality to Persuade
Using the other person’s personality to persuade
In this “persuasion post” I am going to answer this reader’s question….
How would you use an individual’s character/personality to persuade them to do something?
Great question!
I believe, based on my years of study and years of application, that the answer to this question has its roots in a couple of different persuasive principles.
The main one being to do everything you can to be in front of the right person at the right time with the right persuasive message.

Matching yourself with the target and having them identify with you as being “one of us” is powerful. But the key is to really be a match.
Here’s a personal example and I’ll tie in the current political climate.
Jamie and I are both working parents. We have two children, we both come from, not too large, but not small immediate families (we both have 3 brothers). Our personality/character is similar to Sarah Palin’s situation. At least it looks that way.
Because we can identify with her we are easily persuaded by her.
Then take McCain. As a young businessman with the greatest of aspirations and the best years still ahead of me I admire his accomplishments.
When I look at Barock Obama I see a law professor turned politician. So if Obama tried to use my personality to persuade me – he’d be fighting an uphill battle.
I think when he tries to identify with certain voters it comes off as a little fake.
The bottom line is to always be genuine with the people you are attempting to persuade!
