The Wrong Way to Market

It’s funny how great teaching examples come from both correct and incorrect principles.

Last week I got an email from a woman who I didn’t know. The only reason it caught my eye was that it was the second or third email I had received from her in a couple of weeks.

Now- I am on a lot e-newsletter lists- but I knew that I had not subscribed to receive emails from her (like you’ve done with my emails).

So I figured  I’d open the email and find some Bad Marketing lessons to share and sure enough I was right! She was basically SCREEMING at me to attend some- “Go green save the planet event.” Now I’m all for preserving our environment! But I was wondering, as I looked at this email, why she was emailing me?

I mean I didn’t ask to receive these emails. I didn’t opt in at her website. I don’t belong to any “go green” clubs that might be endorsing this woman. So I figured that she must have gotten my email address off of my website or from the listing I have with the local Chamber of Commerce. That is a NO-NO btw!

I am really busy these days- but something compelled me to ask her how she got my email address. Maybe because the Gods of Bad Marketing Lessons were smiling on me that day, who knows??

So I hit reply and politely asked her. Then- it must have been true- the Gods of Bad Marketing lessons were smiling on me… She emailed back and said…

“I’m not sure how I got your email address but you should come to my blah blah event!”

A-Maze-zing! Really bad Marketing in the Flesh!
