Goals and Intentions
If you’re a reader of “Self-Help” or “Personal Development” material you’ve no doubt heard a little bit about both, goals and intentions.
What you usually see is a “guru” picking one or the other. Some believing and preaching; “Goals are the key to success.” “Without goals there’s no way to determine where you’re going.” and… “If you don’t know where you’re going you might end up somewhere else.” “Ya gotta have those goals!” Do you agree? I do.
Then, you got the “Intention Guru.” They say things like… “Set your intentions and watch the law of attraction work for you.” “Get clear on your intentions.” “The power of intention.” Do you agree? I do.
Am I drinking the guru cool-aid? No, I don’t drink success guru cool-aid! In fact, the James Arthur Ray fiasco should warn you about the dangers of “success guru cool-aid.”
I agree because I believe in the power of a solid foundation.
My knowledge of building engineering is limited. But I do know it takes a deep hole, concrete, a metal cage of steel, steel beams and whole lot of people to dig the foundation of a sky-scraper. Therefor it takes more than one “success concept” to build the foundation of success for an individual or a business. The more solid your foundation the better you’re going to be, the taller you can stand! In my book, Motion Before Motivation, I list several “evergreen success principles.”
The Definitions…
Intention – An act or instance of determining mentally upon some action or result.
The end or object intended; purpose.
Goal – The result or achievement toward which effort is directed; aim; end.
The goal is a must because it tells you where to direct your effort. The intention also has the end in mind, but adds the ingredient of purpose and action. Without purpose and action, the goal is gonna be difficult to achieve.
Think of some goals you’d like to achieve, then determine your purpose and what actions you’re gonna take to bring them into reality. Now start digging.
